Creative Spaces with Trisha Brink

Trisha's Blog ~ Trisha Brink Design, Trisha's Flickr. ~ Trisha Brink Design, Her Shop ~ Grandiflora Home and Garden

"Even if I had a million dollars, I would STILL shop at junk stores. Random statement? Yes. Silly? No. One can find the most interesting things at junk shops. I like the way they challenge me to rethink things....to tweek an object to my whim...to amuse me.

I've always wanted my home to be comfy and cozy. I want folks to enter the front door and be at ease and intruigued all at once. You know those homes that you walk into and everyting matches? It looks like they went to the local box store and asked for room number sixteen and had it deliverd and "applied" to their living room? Well, I couldn't go there. Even if I could've afforded to buy room number sixteen, I just wouldn't be able to bring myself to do it. I can only label my style as "Trisha's house" style. I don't know anyone who wallpapers with old sheet music, hangs an embroidery hoop on their wall filled with car fabric, and hangs paper party lanterns out all year, even though the party is over.

You can't overthink good design. Good design comes from your feelings. The way I am and the way we are as a family, comes out in our decor. I'm happy to tell you that our home reflects who we are for now and I hope I never stop rearranging to reflect who we become. I love my home. I want to take care of it, give it life, help it breathe. Decor does that...it beckons to be refreshed. Are you listening to yours? I guarantee if you do, you will be pleasantly rewarded with a feeling of peace as you are surrounded by your most favored posessions...your family. For, after all, a home is nothing if not shared."

I love your thoughts on home and family, Trisha (I'll definitely have to try that "car fabric" idea). Thanks so much for sharing them with us today. :)

In your opinion, what makes Trisha's home a "Creative Space"?

I'll tell you what I like...the cozy vignettes, colorful/whimsical objects, and the clean crisp feel. Boy, does my house need some work! lol.

  10. The natural colors with the vibrant colors with all the different textures make it so interesting. I love mixing new with old. The orange color on the wall behind the picture is so vibrant. I love all the patterns behind the TV! Fun stuff.

  11. vicki,
i just saw your article in Artful Blogging. cheers to you!
    i love your photos.

More importantly, I could totally relate to your battle with MS.
I also battle a rare disorder, SCLS, along with MGUS.
These past 2 and1/2 years have been difficult for my family and me.
My health has affected us all on a daily basis.
Instead of being the caretaker, i have become the caretaken. if you know what i mean.

After 7 children and 27 years of marriage, i was just beginning to venture out, making things happen that i had always wanted, but had been put on hold, because of responsibilities, lack of time, and energy.

I have always been a stay at home mom, a huge blessing and a privilege !! I even home-schooled for 7 years.
Over the years, i taught my children along my side, i learned how to garden, bake bread, and can jams and jellies,--basically tried to incorporate as much domestic creativity into our daily lives.

But, art workshops and trips to flea markets were not feasible.
Now, at 45 years of age, as the children have grown- i began to focus on bringing my long awaited dreams into fruition. And then i became sick.
It's an overwhelming mental battle. But, the outpouring of love from my husband, family, and friends has been huge.
God's grace is sufficient. But, i often forget to ask for it in the midst of all of this.
I battle anger, depression, and a sense of loss for what i thought would be. But, at the same time, i see the Lord working in my life everyday.
    And i am thankful.
I know this is lengthy, but i just wanted to tell you how much i value your blog and your honesty with MS.
I too, hope i can still find ways to express myself through whatever means - be it my blog, photography, etc.
I am going to seriously consider online workshops. This so makes sense. If plan A doesn't work, just go to plan B!!
    Bless you.
    love,maire

  13. Hi everyone, I just wanted to say thanks so much for all the lovely comments on my home photos. You ladies are great...and a huge thanks to you Vicki for the feature...I am so flattered to have been chosen.

Marie, I am praying for you...my six year old son has a very rare disease called Linear Schleroderma En Coup de Sabre ( an auto immune disease in the Rheumetalogical family) we live in a constant state of wondering where this will take his little life. Having a "sick" family member is so much more difficult to deal with....but it also makes everything in life just a bit sweeter...as we value eachother and our home together. I hope things will go well for you, and that you will find joy in every little bloom of life. Blessings....and stick with Vicki....she's SO wonderful and genuine.

    Thanks again all!
    Trish :o)
