Using Textures/Overlays in Your Photos

Good morning! Well, looks like it's just me today. Irena Sophia is busy preparing her interview for the "I Create" series and I hope to feature her next week.

A couple of days ago I discovered how to use textures in my work and now I'm hooked! The one I used for the above photo reminded me of the results I would get with an old TTV camera so I thought I'd give it a try.

If you're a photographer, do use textures to enhance your images? I notice there are a variety of opinions on using textures. Some photographers use them to enhance their work, some use them in a bolder way, and some don't use them at all! What do YOU think of using textures?

  1. Beautiful! I love texture, borders and anything artistic that enhances the photo. But I am so bad at it. I have a new Mac and Photoshop Elements 6 and have not figured out how to download most apps and get them to work. Still learning the basics of Photoshop. Wish there were more hours in the day... Any tutorials that anyone could recommend would be great. Thanks!

  2. I haven't used textures but that's because, gasp! I don't use Photoshop. I might try it someday. I know I would lean towards the subtle. I try not to overly process my images, but just tweak the colors a bit when needed.

  3. Thanks for sharing, Pamela and Jessica. Jessica, I don't have Photoshop either but use the online program, Picnik. Have you heard of it? Your images are amazing so you're doing something right. ;)

  8. Well of course I'm a texture addict and proud of it! Been using them for quite a while now, but I definately see an improvement in my style.
Love the Florabella and Jessica Drossin ones.
I just posted some new photos on my blog with almost all of them textured.

  9. I love textures; I lile my photos to have a faded, vintage look. Every once in a while I make myself tak epictures that I'm not going to manipulate, though - keeps me learning.

  10. Hm, I've never used textures before. I'm just now discovering the wonderful world of filters and presets :) Though I still prefer to tweak settings to my preferences.

I am absolutely in love with your umbrella picture and the texture totally works.

  11. o.k., Dottie...what is a filter and a preset? Something new for me to learn!

Erin, I'd love to see your photos...are they on your blog?

  12. I do not use photoshop nor elements so I cannot use textures, however, there is one texture I would like to use if I could (used by "I see the moon") in her photographs of the hays and the girl holding a bouquet of flowers in her back, you have featured previously ... I really like the tone it gives and making the photograph slightly old and used ... and if I could find a texture that made your photos feel like a polaroid, I would, does it exist ? please let me know :)

  13. Nathalie, I'll contact Martha from "I See the Moon" and ask her about those textures. I'm curious, too!

  14. I do sometimes use textures . Sometimes most of my work would be done with it until I get sick of it and then that is the end of it for a long time.
Sometimes all it takes is a beautiful work of some talented photographer that works with textures to get me inspired to use it on mine too.

  15. love your textured photo!

i enjoy using textures and use picnik and the variety of free textures available on flickr to create to create the texturized effects i achieve.

    here's a set of my texture http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucyloomis/sets/72157622969816124/

and here's a great short video on layering with textures using picnik: http://blog.picnik.com/2008/10/how-to-3-layering/

picknik can also help you achieve polaroid effects using the curves feature and the polaroid frame. you can also try the free poladroid program for that:

  16. Wow, Lucy....thanks for your helpful tips! I'm going to go check out those links. :)

Btw, Nathalia, I did talk to Martha and she couldn't recall the exact textures she used for her photos. She like Skeletel Mess on Flickr, though.
