"Light is life! There is no greater element in a painting than the light that illuminates it and defines it. Light in the painting is essential to all our visual understanding of the objects in the piece. Light has a kind of energy that makes things happen in both the painting and the person viewing the painting. Light describes, determines, models and reveals, these elements of art; shape, form, color and texture. The contrast that develops though the use of light or the lack of it, directs the attention of the spectator. The energy of light invigorates our bodies.

Watercolor is the ideal medium for expressing the complexities of light because of its transparent nature. By combining the use of white watercolor paper, application of layers or glazes of transparent paint and allowing time to dry between each glaze, the colors glow or subdue. Depending on how the light is affecting the subject, warm and cool colors are laid on top of each other to give the wanted effect of shadowed areas or the place where light is and is not. Often the paper is left white to show the highest contrast between the light and dark. This can be a very long process but I enjoy watching the painting develop come alive over time.

I graduated from Oregon State University with a BA and BS. My emphasis was in fine art.

I am a member of the Oregon Watercolor Society. I have been juried into local and national watercolor shows and fairs. I show at Bush Gallery in Salem, OR and Briggs & Co.Gallery in Winters, CA."
