Colorful Scents ~ We Heart This

It’s a given that makeup aficionados are entranced by color. From the deep teal shimmer of an eyeliner to the bright, pink pop of a shiny lip gloss; these are a few of their favorite things. But often a beauty junkie's love of color doesn't stop at cosmetics. For me, the place where this is most apparent is in my perfume collection. It's not just what's inside the vessel that gets me excited. The bottles themselves are inspirations, colorful works of art that when done correctly, foreshadows the scent and gives you a beautiful glimpse of what you're about to experience.

Here are 5 of my favorite examples of fragrance bottles done oh-so right:

BROOKLYN PERFUME by Bond #9

For me, hands down, the most gorgeous perfume bottles are made by Bond No. 9. This fragrance house makes perfume inspired by the city they are based in and love; New York. Both the notes of the scent and the look of the bottle perfectly capture the street or neighborhood. Take Brooklyn, an arty, urban beauty mixing light notes (Grapefruit and Geranium Leaves) with deep, rich ones (Cedarwood and Leather) in a bright, graffiti covered bottle.

CHINATOWN PERFUME by Bond #9

Or, one of my favorite scents of all time, Chinatown, the floriental perfume as complex as the area itself. This cheerful pink, cherry blossom covered bottle contains the intoxicating mix of peach blossoms, gardenia, tuberose, patchouli and cardamom.

CRESCENT ROW by Benefit Cosmetics

Benefit Cosmetics always perfectly mixes modern cheekiness with a retro touch. Their new line of 3 fragrances called Crescent Row, is no exception. The beautiful bottles are based on a vintage family-owned cocktail shaker and further individualized by covering the surface with color and graphics that lend to each scent. (Intrigued? Read my review of my favorite of the 3 scents)

WODE PERFUME by Boudicca

A bit gothic and absolutely mysterious, Wode by Boudicca, explores the myth around Queen Boudicea. Legend has it that she and her tribe wore cobalt blue war paint on their skin when advancing into battle. When finally defeated by the Romans, she killed herself by swallowing hemlock, an extract of which is included in Wode. When this perfume is sprayed, a vibrant cobalt blue mist appears and settles on the skin or clothing and fades within minutes, disappearing completely and leaving behind only the light, yet somehow dark scent. The bottle? What else but the sexiest and most elegant spray paint can you've ever seen!

BEACHY by Lilly Pulitzer

I don’t know if any bottle has ever been more of an ode to the designer than Beachy is to Lilly Pulitzer. Credited with the invention of the shift dress, she is even better known for the material chose to make them with. Bright, fun patterns originally selected to hide the juice stains she was prone to get while working on the citrus groves and juice stands she owned and operated with and her husband. Beachy has a tiny scarf in a signature Lily print tied around the neck of its slim, ocean blue bottle. The gold Palm Tree on the label and the scent itself, with notes ranging from watermelon, marine air accord and tiare flower, are a nod to Palm Beach, Florida, where Lily lived most of her life.

FIFI CHACHNIL PERFUME

Is there any question what kind of woman wears Fifi Chachnil? She’s not a tomboy, that’s for sure! From the vintage French inspired bottle (complete with a squeeze bulb, bow and tassel) to the pretty pink perfume itself with notes of fruits, powdery rose and amber, this is about as girly as it gets!

* I’m hoping some fellow COLOR LOVERS can introduce me to some new contenders for my collection that look as lovely as they smell. What are your favorite scents?

  1. Great post, Stef! One perfume I love (but can't afford) is Coach Legacy. I think it's a younger scent, but it's really soft and feminine. I'm looking forward to hearing everyone else's favorites. :)

For me personally, I'd bathe in Bond No 9 Chinatown if I could!

  3. All right, so the WodePefume may be the least colorful but this bit "When this perfume is sprayed, a vibrant cobalt blue mist appears and settles on the skin or clothing and fades within minutes, " has me completely captivated! I couldn't add it to my "To Buy" list fast enough!

Very nice posy Stef and thanks to Vicki for all of her support of we heart this!

  4. Coming from a fellow fragrance junkie, wehearthis fan and new-but-enthusiastic Simply Hue fan, I love love love the collaboration and concept of this post and I *adore* your selections, Stef!

I'd like to add a few to the mix:

Chantal Thomass L'Eau de Parfum. What would you expect from an iconic French lingerie designer who creates everything from uber-sexy corsets to playful, cheeky bloomers?

The flushed pink bottle resembles a female, stockinged leg (complete with black seem running down the back of the leg) and it comes with a real, miniature black lace garter around the thigh. Ooh la la!

A sexy pink bottle for an even sexier fragrance.

And also, let's not forget the most well-known purple bottle ever, Dior Poison:

It's still intriguing and seductive, if you ask me!

And since all things 80s seem to be back in vogue, who can forget the primary-color-themed Liz Claiborne edt:

If this bottle doesn't evoke certain feelings and memories, I don't know what would. lol. :)
